“The people of Bosnia and Herzegovina are happy to hear that a movement, “World Peace 2000″ is growing. They know very well the real meaning of the word peace, after 4 years of war and are especially sensitive to the idea that there is no peace without justice. “From the Office of the Vice President, September 13, 1999 “What a wonderful way to welcome the new Millennium! Throughout history and in all its cultures, the sharing of a meal has symbolized peace, brotherhood and charity. The 21st Century offers so many wonderful promises of technological and economic advances. Your coming together for the [One Day in Peace] Project adds the caring human dimension that must also be a part of the vision for the next century. , , Thank you for all you do. The world is a better place for it.

“My illustrious ancestor Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, who was the architect of the civil rights movement, would certainly commend John Conyers’ efforts in helping to carry the baton for human justice, liberation and dignity. I appeal to everyone to support the continuance of Congressman Conyers’ work and vision, a legacy-in -progress, on behalf of the Global Family Day and its upcoming celebration January 1, 2005.”

“As they used to say, ‘What if they gave a war and nobody came?’ How worthwhile if they declared a day of peace and everybody came.”
Ed Asner

“The Space Age is shrinking distances between us on the planet and in the universe with irreversible momentum, bringing us ever closer to each other. We will eventually live in the intimacy of a village. A village lives by the harmonious cooperation of its people - to share in the digging of a well or the reaping of a harvest or the education of its children. So I believe the Peace of the Millennium is inevitable — and I celebrate it!”

Here in Fort Myers, FL we are starting a tradition of a Global Family Day celebration in our community. Families from all cultures and faiths are joining together on January 1, 2009 to share a meal, good company and the peace that comes with the realization we are all “one family.”

I love the idea of Global Family Day. I’ve grown up with family Sunday and Holiday dinners all of my life. I have friends though who a have not had these wonderful experiences in their lives. Sometimes I feel like they are searching for something and all they ever needed was always there but everyone just took it for granted or well they didn’t know how to make it work for them. Family and friends need to come together to just make a better world.

The callenges of the 21st century cannot be faced alone. Global Family Day gives us the opportunity to build common traditions giving us the common ground on which to work together as a global family.

It is good to see so many world leaders backing this important initiative. One question? Where’s President Bush?

I agree with Kita. If we can come together as an international family, for just one day, we have made the first step toward building a better world.

Global Family Day is new to me. What a great concept. We will take a moment at our family table to celebrate this new holiday.
